Sam Bowen, the teenage son of form Bluebirds midfield player Jason, scored for Cardiff City in their 1-1 Professional under-23 Development League draw against Coventry City at the Alan Higgs Centre.

Bowen struck after 50 minutes, firing a low shot home from an angle past former Cardiff City youth ‘keeper Ben Wilson.

Jordan Ponticelli, a 21-year-old striker who has played 32 first team matches for Coventry, equalised when he half-volleyed home a knock-down from a corner.

“It lacked intensity and any real spark from both sets of players,” said Ponticelli after the game.

“As with a lot of u-23 matches, it’s a mis-match of players of those coming in to get match minutes and fitness, so it’s a little bit harder to work together as a team.

“We try to preach that if you don’t win the game, you don’t lose it.”

Bowen hit a post during the first half and he scored just after half-time.

The equaliser came when Declan Drysdale flicked on a corner kick which was hit on the half volley by substitute Ponticelli to score the equaliser.

Striker Ponticelli is back with Coventry City after a disappointing loan spell at Tranmere Rovers and took his chance to impress watching manager Mark Robins. He replaced  Amadou Bakayoko after 66 minutes and scored nine minutes later in the 75th.

The Bluebirds pressed forward early on and Bowen went close, but his shot from 25 yards hit a post.

Mark Harris fired over the bar soon after there were no goals during the first half.

Cardiff went ahead soon after half-time, when Sam Bowen slid his shot past goalkeeper Wilson from 15 yards.

Wilson then made two saves to deny Cardiff a second, one from Jake Evans then, from the resulting corner, he stopped another Bowen effort.

Coventry equalised when Ponticelli, on the half half-volley from inside the area, found the back of the net.

Wilson was forced into another save, tipping a Harris shot over the bar and the game ended 1-1.

The next fixture for Cardiff is against Crystal Palace away on Monday, January 27.
