Under-18 Match Report – Cardiff City 2, Millwall 3

Tyrese Briscoe, a 17-year-old striker, scored twice for Millwall in their Professional Under-18 Development League win against Cardiff City at Cardiff International Sports Arena.

The young Bluebirds led 2-1 at half-time against PDL South leaders Millwall, but the visitors from London fought back and Briscoe scored twice, after 63 minutes and then two minutes into injury time.

Cardiff and Millwall could meet again – in the FA Youth Cup – if City beat AFC Bournemouth away in a fourth round tie at the Vitality Stadium, Dorset on Tuesday, January 14 (7pm).

The winners will be at home against Millwall in the last 16.

Former Spurs and Southampton defender Chris Perry, now aged 46, is Millwall’s youth manager and he has steered them to the top of PDL South, thanks to 12 wins, one draw and three defeats.

Last season, the Lions finished third in the South table, nine points behind first-placed Bluebirds, who progressed to the PDL final.

Millwall have scored 52 goals during their 2019-20 PDL campaign, conceding 19.

Their top scorer is Sean O’Brien on 11 goals, while Abdul Abdulmalik is on 10.

Cardiff youth coach Matthew Bloxham made five changes to the starting line-up, with Australian goalkeeper Jaimie Cogman, James Cole, Tom Chiabi, Siyabonga Ligendza and Rubin Colwill called up.

Oli Bate fired Millwall ahead from close range after six minutes, while Cogman made a series of outstanding saves to keep the score at 1-0.
