Player Ratings – West Bromwich Albion 4, Cardiff City 2

Alex Smithies – Man of the Match

Man of the match – by a country mile. His magnificent saves kept City in contention – and his overall game was spot on 9

Lee Peltier

Quality right-back who struggled against Albion, who have Premier-style pace and talent. A stressful 90 minutes for Peltier defensively 5

Sean Morrison (capt)

Decent in both penalty areas, but Weast Brom simply had too much firepower. Skipper Morrison, who looked composed during a tough match, must help lift his team for a big push after the international break 7

Aden Flint

A difficult match for Flint, who will win aerial duels all afternoon and is a powerful defender. The Baggies pace and skill in abundance and that made life difficult for the big defender 5

Joe Bennett

The left-back faced Albion winger Matt Phillips was courted by Cardiff seven years ago. The Bluebirds offered £800,000 to Blackpool for Phillips – and he showed why City were keen by giving Bennett a torrid time 5

Leandro Bacuna

We saw too little of Bacuna’s attacking talents because he was forced to spend so much time helping out defensively 5

Marlon Pack

Oh, how he ran and chased. Had to spend far too much time plugging gaps when Albion broke with furious pace. A key player in City’s bid for a play-offs finish 6

Callum Paterson

Stepped in for Tomlin. Why? The Scot has many assets, but he doesn’t possess the playmaking skills of Tomlin, who played a key role in the 3-0 win against QPR at home. Paterson could not make an impact at the Hawthorns 5

Gavin Whyte

City started well and Whyte was at the heart of almost everything going forward. When Albion gained a foothold in the game and score Whyte’s contribution faded 6

Junior Hoilett

The Canadian heads off to join his national team for matches against USA over the international break. Lots of promise against Albion with his wing play, but too often failed to deliver the final ball accurately 6

Robert Glatzel

We have to see more from the German striker. Has scored two goals this season, but City must improve their service to him and he has to step up consistency. Saw too little of Glatzel, but he did have a ‘goal’ disallowed and missed a glorious chance 5
