Alex Smithies

Man of the match even though he conceded three goals. The defending in front of him was abysmal and he was helpless each time. Kicked well, saved a penalty and kept his cool to avoid another Reading goal when two strikers ran at him unchallenged 6

Leandro Bacuna

Played at right-back with Lee Peltier not in the matchday 18 because of an ankle problem. Booked, gave away possession far too easily and was poor overall 4

Joe Bennett

Tried his best to get forward and make an impact in attack, but ultimately to no avail. 5

Sean Morrison (capt)

Clumsy challenge conceded a penalty from which Reading could have made it 4-0. The partnership with Flint isn’t developing. They are too similar in style and both lack pace 4

Aden Flint

City look unsettled and flaky in defence. Morrison, Flint and Co in the back four must tighten things up after six goals have been conceded in two Championship away fixtures. It’s not just about defenders, though – the whole team must improve. Flint was beaten to the ball at the near post for Reading’s second goal 4

Will Vaulks

Found lacking when Puscas ran down the left from halfway, cut inside and scored Reading’s first. The Romanian striker is far from the quickest, but he left Vaulks for dead with that run – and none of his team-mates tried to help. Replaced at half-time 4

Joe Ralls

Was taken to hospital with illness after the win against Luton and it was touch and go whether he would play at Reading. Started alongside Pack, protecting the back four. Always on the move, but City’s back six were opened up far too easily 5

Marlon Pack

For 20 minutes or so City were on top – and Pack was a vocal and dominant figure through the middle. When he went off with a hamstring injury the Bluebirds faded badly 5

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

NML simply did not look fit. Returned from a hamstring injury, but on the evidence of this performance he came back too early. Struggled badly, anonymous 4

Junior Hoilett

Suffered a first half injury and was taken off at half-time. Looked dangerous early on, but quickly faded and took a bang on an ankle 4

Robert Glatzel

One sizzling strike brought a big save from the Reading ‘keeper, but the German striker is simply not getting any quality service from midfield. Worked hard 5

Curtis Nelson

for Pack 23 minutes

There were glimpses of quality from Nelson, but not enough and City’s performance dipped after Pack went off

Callum Paterson

for Vaulks 46

His long throws are too predictable, but the Scot did mix things up in midfield and gave City an edge 5

Isaac Vassell

for Hoilett 46

Looked up for the challenge, but did not really threaten a goal. Again, the service to him was poor. Seemed to be caught the wrong side of defenders too often and Reading comfortably cut out promising attacks 5
