Alex Smithies

Given the nod ahead of Joe Day, who was among the subs. Etheridge is ruled out any a hamstring problem and I was pleased to see Smithies start. He was outstanding and highly professional during the under-23 pre-season tour to Cornwall 7

Lee Peltier

Strong, solid, effective down the right. Will be first choice for most of the season 7

Joe Bennett

Faced by Colin McManaman and did a steady job defensively. The link between Bennett and Murphy down the left needs some work, but it could be hugely successful as season develops 7

Sean Morrison (capt)

With the skipper at centre-half, alongside Flint, and leader Pack operating in front of the back four City look solid 7

Aden Flint – Man of the Match

Home debut for the towering centre-half and he scored a first Bluebirds goal. Magnificent goal-saving tackle to dispossess Mc Namaman just after the hour and spare Bennett’s blushes after he was caught out 8

Joe Ralls

Learned a lot in the Premier League last season and he’s back in the groove – confident, energetic and helping to make things tick for City 7

Robert Glatzel

German striker bought for £5.5m, made his Bluebirds debut. Pace, power and direct running. Plays off the shoulder of defenders, but also comfortable taking possession deeper 7

Josh Murphy

Lively, brought, dangerous, full of tricks, willing to track back and defend. Does need to be more aware defensively – his failure to react quickly enough after one Luton break was almost costly. Pace gave Luton major problems and he created several chances for others and was willing to shoot. Booked for simulation after 20 minutes. Harsh decision. Made way for Hoilett 7

Callum Paterson

A first appearance since March. Now fully fit after injury. Played in the No. 10 role, supporting Glatzel 7

Marlon Pack

Full debut for the midfield signing from Bristol City. A warrior who is constantly directing the team from his central position 8

Gavin Whyte

Home debut and full debut for the signing from Oxford. Went on from. The bench at Wigan 7
