Player Ratings – Wigan Athletic 3, Cardiff City 2

Neil Etheridge

Went off just before the hour a collision led to a hamstring strain. City led 1-0 when their first choice ‘keeper departed. He had been well protected by defenders in front of him. Substitute Joe Day did a good job taking over 7

Lee Peltier

The right-back didn’t get tight enough to Lee Evans when he smashed in Wigan’s winning goal from 30 yards. Quality defender who will be looking to improve next time out 6

Aden Flint – Man of the Match

I’m looking forward to seeing the Flint/Morrison partnership develop. The 6ft 4ins Flint was dominant in the air and looks a quality defender 8

Sean Morrison (capt)

The skipper was below his best and conceded a penalty, but he’s a class act at Championship level and will show that over the season. His link with Flint may yet become the best at this level 6

Joe Bennett

A left-back with composure and poise. Defensively solid and worked to get forward 6

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

It’s good to watch ML in full flight, a player with pace and direct running. He will be a key player over the season 6

Joe Ralls

Learned a lot in the Premier last season and will thrive at Championship level. Was one of four City players booked – and he pushed his luck in terms of going close to a second caution. Worked hard, put himself about and score 7

Leandro Bacuna

I felt Neil Warnock would give Will Vaulks the nod alongside Ralls, but he went for Bacuna. Did a solid job operating in front of the back four 7

Josh Murphy

There is, I’m certain, a lot more to come from Murphy and Warnock is the manager to help him improve. This is his breakthrough season and he has to step things up 6

Bobby Deckordova-Reid

In a similar situation to Murphy – a lot more to come. But can’t keep saying that for too long. Now is Bobby’s time. He has an abundance of talent and he must bring that out 6
